100 years ago, 1911

Although the records at the registry of deeds in Auburn tell many interesting stories, one which was recorded a short time ago for the sake of having it on the records is one of the best on record. It is a quit claim deed given in 1803 by John Marshall of Lewiston to David Davis of Lewiston. This deed is for 100 acres of land in lot 70 of the original map of Lewiston and comprised of Mount David, as it is now known, and the land thereabouts. The price paid for the land was $5. At the time of the writing of the deed, Lewiston was in the county of Lincoln in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

50 years ago, 1961

Normand Maheux of Knox Street, Lewiston, checked quickly with police when he heard cries of help coming from the outside telephone booth near the DeWitt Hotel last night.

Patrolman Ronald Guenette then checked the telephone booth and found a slightly embarrassed 25-year-old woman inside.

She explained that she had entered the booth to use the telephone and then couldn’t open it to get out. That explained the cries for help.

25 years ago, 1986

David C. Harkins, founder and director of the physical/occupational therapy services at St. Mary’s Hospital, has resigned from that position, effective Nov. 30, after more than 20 years of association with the institution.

Harkins will continue his professional practice in the Lewiston-Auburn area, he said Friday, with specific plans to be announced later.
