FAIRFIELD — Beverly R. Melanson, 83, of 29 Howard St., Mexico, died following a brief illness and after a long and happy life, on Nov. 17, with her family by her side.
She was born in Rumford, Feb. 29, 1928, a daughter of Benjamin and Alice (Fraser) Robertson.
Beverly was a graduate of Mexico High School and Boston University. She married George J. Melanson on June 19, 1948. They were married for 57 years when George passed away on Jan. 3, 2006.
She was a member of the Mexico Congregational Church, UCC. Beverly was employed in several secretarial positions at Oxford, Ethyl and Boise Cascade Corporations, retiring as a purchasing agent in 1990. She loved to travel and took many trips with her husband and their friends, and later with her children and grandchildren.
She was a volunteer coordinator for the Meroby Elementary School and Literacy Volunteers of America. She was an active volunteer at both the Meroby School Library as well as the Mexico Public Library.
Beverly was the author of the book, “Remembering Ridlonville,” written in 2005, and donated to the Mexico Historical Society. Her many hobbies included golf, bowling, learning to play bridge with special friends, knitting, crocheting, photography, scrapbooking and card making. She especially loved their camp at Roxbury Pond, where she and George entertained their children and grandchildren with a very special theme party every July 4.
She is survived by a son, G. Jay Melanson and wife, Dorothy, of Falmouth; a daughter, Lynne A. Marshall and husband, Lee, of Fairfield; a sister, Florence Jacobsen and husband, Rolf, of Fairfield, Iowa; five granddaughters, Lauren Bowen and Jeffrey of Champaign, Ill., Allison Johansmeier and Jacob of Portland, Nora Fagan and Marc of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Mary Melanson and Erin Melanson of Falmouth; and several close nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, George J. Melanson; two sisters, Geneva Delgado and Gloria Roy; and a brother, William.
Many special thanks are extended to her dear friend, Jennie, who supplied unfailing support and laughter over the years.
