Police continue to investigate an accident that seriously injured two Lisbon teenagers in Bowdoin on Saturday night.

Speed was a factor in the crash, which sent the driver, Sean Campbell, and his passenger, Jayme Skelton, both 19, to Central Maine Medical Center with broken bones and other injuries, State Trooper Jon Leach said shortly after visiting the scene of the accident again Tuesday afternoon.

Police are still trying to determine how fast the vehicle was going when it left Route 201 and traveled a significant distance before striking trees at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, he said.

What exactly happened during the crash has been difficult to determine. Police initially thought the vehicle, a Toyota Scion, had not rolled over during the crash but now believe it did, Leach said.

“This isn’t your typical crash,” Leach said. “If you look at the vehicle, you don’t get a lot of information” because of the severity of the damage. He had not yet been able to interview the two teenagers because of their injuries.

“They’re extremely lucky to have survived the crash,” Leach said.

Campbell remained in the hospital Tuesday, Leach said. He did not know Skelton’s status.
