GARDINER — The vocal trio moira smiley & VOCO (Emily Eagen & April Guthrie) of California will perform their trademark a cappella harmonies in concert at Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Dec. 4.

The three women play cello, banjo, accordion, ukulele and body percussion. They warp old American shape-notes and sizzling hambone with an avant-garde experimental spirit and warm wit.

Their “A Winter Gust of Song” concert is a collection of American folk songs of winter, stars, evergreens and parallel celebration songs from Eastern Europe.

Besides leading the trio, singer-composer Smiley travels the world as a soloist and creates new work for dance, theater and film. Her recent albums, “blink,” “rua” and “circle, square, diamond & flag,” feature spare, vocally driven collections of warped traditionals and new song.

Smiley has sung with leading ensembles and artists around the world, including Paul Hillier’s Theater of Voices, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, KITKA Vocal Ensemble and New World Symphony.

She explores the depths of early American, Irish and Balkan traditional song and is in high demand as a music director and vocal coach. Her song “Stand in that River” is performed by choral ensembles and singers worldwide.

The concert, part of the Sounds Good! Music Live series, will begin at 4 p.m. at the hall at 280 Water St. Tickets are $16, $6 for students 22 and younger. For reservations, call 582-7144 or email [email protected]. Show and dinner (afterward at Francesca’s of Hallowell) tickets are available for $30.
