NORWAY — Stone-Smart American Legion held their monthly meeting on Nov. 9 with president Thelma Denlinger presiding.

Denlinger gave secretary letters from Sen. Snowe and Sen. Collins wishing Unit 82 a happy birthday for their 91st year.

Lucille Allen reported on the unit’s recent flea market sale. First place winner of the raffle was Joyce Clifford. There were six smaller prizes of a bag of apples and jug of cider. Winners were  Joe Cooney, Chris Denlinger, Shelia Kiley, Joyce Clifford, Christine Weiss and Melissa Dullea.

Allen reported that she delivered bags of candy to Main Street merchants to give out to children.

Members voted to make the following donations: for military kids Christmas, Ronald McDonald House, Beals House, Androscoggin Home Health and Western Maine Veterans Home in Bob Sessions’ memory, as he was one of the group that brought the veterans home to the area and was also very involved in helping veterans get needed services. The group voted to remember Post veterans who are ill at home or in nursing homes with a gift of money.

The unit voted to remember women veterans. Beulah will visit with them and bring them a gift.

Members voted a donation to the kayak project for military kids at Bog Brooks in Gilead. This is a Dept. of Maine Children and Youth project directed to military kids who have a parent in service overseas.

Denlinger spoke on her project of sending Christmas items to a soldier in Afghanistan, who will share them with other soldiers. The box is in the hall on Monday nights. Donations are needed, whether items or cash.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, the unit will supply refreshments for the Lady Veterans Standown.

Clifford spoke on Child and Youth Welfare Foundation, an American Legion program that collects funds to help children all over the country. She had several blue pigs that can be filled with change and sent to the Dept. of Maine. The ladies took them home and will bring them back full.

The meeting was preceded by a 91st Auxiliary birthday supper. Ernest Clifford and Ralph Moulton were in charge. A roast pork supper with birthday cake and ice cream was served.
