MEXICO — Region 9 School of Applied Technology will offer 10 elective courses next semester for its students and those at high schools in Rumford, Dixfield and Bethel.

“We’ve talked about this for a long time. We want to help students earn elective credits,” said school director Brenda Gammon.

The need for such courses arose because of cuts at the three sending high schools, she said.

“The offerings are fewer and fewer,” she said. “The high schools are finding it more difficult. The 10 courses will be offered during the first period of the day, and will be taught by Region 9 staff who have expertise in the subject areas. Transportation will be provided for students.

“This is an exciting opportunity for students,” Gammon said.

Those interested must contact the Region 9 office at 364-3764 as soon as possible so plans can be made for the Jan. 23 beginning.

Electives include: The Maine Outdoors, Obstacles Teens Face, Your Car and You, Introduction to Fire Sciences, Accounting I, Ornamental Ironwork, Introduction to Cabinetmaking, Adirondack Chairs, Truck Driving Class B, and Medical Terminology.

Each class meets every other day.

Although a few of the classes require a materials fee from $20 to $35, no potential student whose family cannot pay it will be turned away.

Region 9 accepts students from Dirigo High School in Dixfield, Mountain Valley High School in Rumford and Telstar High School in Bethel.
