100 years ago, 1911

Local merchants are asked to be on the lookout for a new counterfeit $5 silver certificate. It is said to be a crude imitation, being a poorly executed photograph on two pieces of cheap paper, the back being colored with green water color paint. The note bears check letter “A” series 1899.

50 years ago, 1961

Lewiston water department workers reached the break in a 24-inch line under Hulett Square late last night, checked the flow of water and expected to have repairs made by early this morning.

Public Works Department Director George J. Mahar reported that normal water service would be restored by 1 a.m. “unless something unexpected happens.”

He announced shortly after 11 p.m. that the situation was under control.

25 years ago, 1986

A “crime alert” has been issued by the Maine Uniform Crime Reporting Unit to draw attention to the increase in theft from motor vehicles and armed robberies.

Thefts from motor vehicles were up 25.5 percent from the first nine months of last year; and the dollar value of property stolen was up 32 percent. The loss was $1,363,247 to the motor vehicles owners.
