MEXICO — Pro wrestling has been here numerous times, but when they arrive on Dec. 10, they will be bringing World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Famer Tony Atlas.
The Saturday event, a fundraiser for the Greater Rumford Community Center, will take place in the Mountain Valley Middle School gymnasium.
Atlas, 57, an imposing figure at 6-2 and 275 pounds, was an American bodybuilder, powerlifter, and professional wrestler who has held multiple titles and championships in each sport. He was also the first man to press slam and pin Hulk Hogan, though Hogan’s foot was on the rope and the referee didn’t see it, according to Wikipedia.
And three hours prior to the 7 p.m. opening bell for the event, Atlas will deliver an educational message to interested youngsters at MVMS.
Speaking from his Auburn home, Atlas said he wants to tell young people what his definition is of “a tough guy.”
“It’s easy to be bad; tough to be good. Tough is when you do your homework on a nice day when you’re friends are playing outside. Tough is when parents tell you to do stuff you don’t want to do. A tough guy is a good guy, one who does not wimp out on life,” he noted, adding that when he delivered this message before, “some little guy with glasses, a nerdy type, said, ‘That’s sounds like me!'”
The event will feature a Barbed Wire match between Brian Fury vs. Julian Starr, with the NWA On Fire Heavyweight Title on the line. Barbed wire will be in both of these competitors’ futures, as the ring ropes will be replaced by the sharpened edges of steel, unforgiving when the skin makes contact.
Another event features the 7-foot-1 Giant Pharaoh taking on Mexico’s own Jason Dolloff in an MMA match, where a submission is the only way to pick up a victory, plus the On Fire tag titles are on the line in a four-way match as the champion Shooting Stars defend against the Minute Men, Capital Punishment and the Party Boyz.
Reserved ringside tickets are $12 in advance or $14 at the door. General admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the GRCC, Maddy’s Pizza and Mountain Valley Variety.
GRCC Program Director Bob Anderson said proceeds from concessions sold at the event will be evenly divided between the GRCC and the MVMS Parent Teacher Organization.
