NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Senior Kelsey Flaherty notched a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Bates to a 74-62 victory over Norwich University in women’s basketball action Saturday.
Junior Taryn O’Connell submitted an impressive 14 poins and eight rebounds off the bench for the Bobcats (4-1). Junior Allie Beaulieu added 12 points and five rebounds.
Senior guards Annie Burns and Lauren Dobish combined for eight points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and four steals for Bates.
Aliah Curry led the Cadets (2-5) with 15 points, while Jocelyn Fasulo provided 11 points and 11 boards.
CMCC 50, Vermont Technical 24
AUBURN — Sophomore guard Karlee Biskup scored a game-high 11 points and five assists to pace Central Maine Community College to a 50-24 victory over Vermont Technical College in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Mustangs (4-2) forced 26 turnovers and held the Knights to just 11 first half points.
Senior Teira Durgin finished with 10 points and five steals for the Mustangs.
Navy 73, Maine 56
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Kara Pollinger knocked down a career-high 24 points to direct Navy to a 73-56 victory over the University of Maine in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Midshipmen responded to Brittany Williams’ opening scoring for the Black Bears with a 10-0 run, highlighted by Chey Arvin’s six points from deep range.
Navy opened up the second half with a 14-4 run, fueled by treys by Pollinger and Arvin to take a 48-29 lead early in the stanza.
Samantha Wheeler led the Black Bears, narrowly missing a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Samantha Baranowski also had 14 points on seven for nine shooting.
Men’s basketball
CMCC 77, Vermont Technical 59
AUBURN — Nick Hinkley posted a game-high 23 points to lift Central Maine Community College to a 77-59 upset victory over Vermont Technical College in men’s basketball action Saturday.
The Mustangs (8-3) muscled their way to a 34-21 halftime lead.
Curtis Miller tossed five field goals, including three from beyond the arc, and five free throws. Alonzo James pitched in with seven field goals for 14 points and seven rebounds.
Josh Lindsey scored a team-high 12 points for the Knights (10-1).
Hockey
Maine 5, Vermont 2
BURLINGTON, Vt. — Spencer Abbott had two goals and two assists, while Joey Diamond added two goals and an assist as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team skated to a 5-2 win over Vermont on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse to complete the weekend sweep.
Abbott, who had three goals and two assists on Friday, finished the weekend with five goals and four assists for nine points.
Maine improves to 6-6-2 on the season and 5-5-1 in Hockey East play.
Vermont falls to 3-10-1 overall, 1-8-1 in conference play.
Maine took a 1-0 lead at 10:30 of the first period with a power play goal.
Matt Mangene had a shot from the middle of the face-off circle that Joey Diamond tipped past UVM goalie John Vazzano.
Spencer Abbott also assisted on the goal for the Black Bears. With the goal, Diamond extended his scoring streak to a career-high seven games.
Maine added to its lead at 14:47 when Diamond skated the length of the ice on a play that developed into a 2-on-1 with Abbott.
He kept the puck and fired a shot past Vazzano for his second goal of the period. Will O’Neill began the play for the Black Bears to pick up the assist.
Women’s hockey
BC 4, Maine 3
ORONO — Boston College’s Melissa Bizzari took a Caitlin Walsh feed and found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 4-3 overtime win over the University of Maine in a women’s ice hockey game Saturday.
Kelly McDonald scored twice for the Black Bears and Brittany Dougherty punched in a goal.
Boston College took a 3-2 lead when Kate Leary tallied a goal 3:27 into the period. Blake Bolden and Emily Pfalzer found Leary on the play for the assists.
Black Bear Brittany Dougherty tied the game up at 3-3 when she snuck a shot through the legs of Boston College goalie Corinne Boyles at 17:08. Jennifer More found Dougherty on the play for her sixth assist of the season.
