DEAR SUN SPOTS: I thoroughly enjoy reading Sun Spots when I come home for the holidays to visit my daughter and her family. Last year I read a heartwarming story that moved me very much. I misplaced the column. I searched all year long, but I couldn’t find it.

I hope you can reprint it so I can send it to my friends in Bakersfield, Calif. It’s about a woman stranded in her car during a blizzard, and a woman with kittens who help her out. This touched me deeply. I hope the kittens survived.

Thank you for the wonderful work you do. Merry Christmas. — Agnes Miller, Bakersfield, Calif.

ANSWER: Sun Spots knows exactly what letter you mean. The original letter appeared Jan.. 11:

“I always get sentimental at this time of year because of something that happened to me while visiting my sister, who was dying of breast cancer. I was on my way back home, and it was snowing quite heavily. I had to pull over frequently to clean my windshield, and the last time I pulled over the car stalled and wouldn’t start.

“After sitting 25 minutes or so with no cars passing and I couldn’t find my cellphone, panic started to set in. In the distance I heard something dragging. It looked like a sled with a slight woman pulling it. In her jacket I could see two frightened kittens.

“She asked me if she could help, and I told her my car wouldn’t start. She said not to worry, that her partner would be their shortly and he would help.

“While talking with her, she told me that their company took care of feral cats and worked out of Greene. After some time, this older man showed up, quite winded but with a big smile and told me ‘don’t worry.’ Before I knew it, I was on my way.

“I never thought to get their names and address. Could you please help me find them? I would like to make a donation. — Helena Cote, Springvale, Ark.”

Helena was rescued by Norm and Rose of Tommy’s Feral Feline Friends. Every day Norm and Rose are out there helping stray cats, even, as this story shows, when it snows.

They have had a hard year, with Norm suffering some health problems, and the economy affecting fundraising. Tommy’s mailing address is P.O. Box 274, Greene, ME 04236.
