JAY — More than 100 volunteers and dozens of donors from around the region pitched in to make the first “fill the cupboard” drive a success.
The drive was held this past weekend in a section of the Jay Plaza, adjacent to Hannaford’s.
More than 2,100 pounds of food and more than $2,500 was collected to benefit the Tri-Ministerial Food Cupboard in Livermore Falls, Don Simoneau, an organizer, said.
The cupboard serves Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls.
The volunteers worked through the cold and windy weather. Those who donated also braved the frigid temperatures.
The box truck was emptied each night over the three days to ensure the items didn’t freeze, Simoneau said.
“We have a great community, and when I say community I am thinking of all the area towns, Canton, Chesterville, Farmington, Fayette, Jay, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Wayne and Wilton,” Simoneau said in an email. “I say that because I saw donations and volunteers coming in all weekend from these towns and people from these areas.”
