STRONG — No one was injured Thursday after a pickup truck slid in the slush and hit a tractor-trailer on Route 4, police said.

A second accident followed when a woman tried to avoid the first accident and slid into a ditch on the side of the road, Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Nate Reid said.

The first accident occurred at 7:35 a.m. when a pickup truck driven by John Nichols of Rangeley was headed south on the road and hit slush, then struck a couple of tires on the trailer of the tractor-trailer in the northbound lane, Reid said.

The tractor-trailer was driven by David Sweetser of Greenwood and is owned by R.C. Lucas Trucking Co. of Porter.

Moments later a car driven by Barbara Tripp of Strong came up behind the pickup truck and tried to move over to avoid the accident, Reid said. Tripp’s car went into a ditch and hit some small trees, he said. It received minor damage, he said.

The pickup truck was totaled, he said.

A couple of tires on the trailer of the tractor-trailer will probably need to be replaced, but it was able to be driven from the scene, Reid said. The rims were dented and the tires had some cuts in them, he said.

Reid was assisted at the scene by county Sgt. Steven Lowell and the Strong Fire Department, which assisted with traffic control.

NorthStar Emergency Medical Service checked the drivers but did not take anyone to a hospital, Reid said.
