OXFORD — Three people were injured early Thursday night when a car and SUV collided on Route 26.

Police said early indications are that a male driving a 1993 Geo Tracker northbound drifted into the oncoming lane shortly after 6 p.m.

The Tracker collided head-on with a 2008 Toyota, driven by a woman who had been heading south on Route 26.

Oxford police were continuing to investigate the crash later Thursday night and did not release the names of the victims.

There were two men in the Geo Tracker, according to Sgt. Rickie Jack. The woman driving the car was traveling alone.

Each of the victims is from the Oxford area.

All three were taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where they remained later in the evening. Jack said the injuries are considered serious although they did not appear to be life-threatening.

Oxford Rescue and Pace Ambulance personnel responded.

The crash occurred on a straight stretch of the road roughly 300 yards from the Abattoir Bridge. The speed limit in that area is 45 mph.
