PORTLAND — Eugene Gorayeb, M.D., 83, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Cedars in Portland, after a gradual decline in his health.

He was born in 1928, to May Akel and Joseph Gorayeb, shopkeepers in Kedgwick, New Brunswick. He met his wife-to-be, Yvette during his college years, when Yvette was entering nursing school. After graduating from Sacred Heart College in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Dr. Gorayeb entered medical school at Laval University in Quebec City. He received his training in general surgery in New York City and Detroit, returning with Yvette and their then three children to Grand Falls, New Brunswick, to begin his practice in surgery and general medicine.

While living in Grand Falls, Dr. and Mrs. Gorayeb had two more children and they both became avid private pilots. The family later moved to Rumford, where Dr. Gorayeb practiced medicine and surgery for nearly 40 years. Upon retirement, Dr. and Mrs. Gorayeb moved to the Atrium in Portland, where Mrs. Gorayeb still resides.

Dr. Gorayeb was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Canada, and the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the American and Maine Medical Associations. He served as chief of the medical staff and on the board of directors of the Rumford Community Hospital. Dr. Gorayeb maintained an abiding interest in medicine and biology during retirement and followed the latest developments in medical research with great fascination.

Dr. Gorayeb is survived by his wife of 59 years, Yvette; his sister, Helene Gorayeb of Herndon, Va.; his children, Denise Gorayeb, CPA of Somerville, Mass., Marc Gorayeb, MD of Hampton, N.H., Lise Gorayeb, OTR/L of Windham and Luc Gorayeb of Gardiner; and his three grandchildren, Christine, Michelle and Nicole.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Jacqueline.
