LISBON FALLS — Twice in the third quarter Wednesday night, the Lisbon Greyhounds produced a surge and cut the deficit to just three points.

Each time Lisbon got within reach of Boothbay, one of two things ultimately got in the way. Either the Greyhounds were burned by their own costly turnovers or a few well-time Boothbay shots squelched any comeback hopes.

After getting so close in the third, Lisbon could only watch the Seahawks pull away in the fourth for a 47-33 win.

“You get turnovers and they get turned into baskets and the lead keeps getting extended and extended,” said Lisbon coach Julie Wescott. “We fought well, but we just didn’t execute at the end. The turnovers add up and they start to bite you. We were in it until we made some mental mistakes.”

Lisbon used a leaner from Jessica Campbell and a drive by Denise Thomas to get within 26-23 late in the third quarter. The Greyhounds then turned the ball over five straight times. A jumper by Jennifer Smith and a free throw from Thomas cut it to 29-26 with 16 seconds remaining, but a Sarah Caron 3 at the buzzer doubled the lead.

Boothbay never looked back. The Seahawks scored six straight to open the fourth and maintained the double- digit lead for most of the final quarter.

Caron helped spark Boothbay (3-2) with nine points in a span of 2:32. She also set up another score that helped her team turn a four-point lead in the third to a 38-26 lead early in the fourth.

“Sarah can score quickly,” said Boothbay coach Dan Wolotsky. “I knew it was coming because she was doing other things well earlier in the game. Her game always flows out of the other things.”

Caron finished with 13 for Boothbay, which was coming off two straight losses to Madison and an overtime heartbreaker against Hall-Dale on Monday. Meghan Smith and Alex Clark each had nine while Abby McLellan added eight.

“We definitely didn’t play up to our ability,” said Wolotsky. “Monday was really rough on us. It was overtime and emotionally, it was really hard on our team.”

Jessica Campbell led Lisbon (2-3) with 11 while Alexa Harmon added nine. Thomas finished with seven. The Greyhounds had two two straight after an 0-2 start.

“I’m proud of their effort,” said Wescott. “We were definitely outsized. They worked as hard as they could. Unfortunately, we probably could have been closer if we had finished a little bit better.”

Led by Briana Moore, Lisbon played hard defensively against Boothbay’s size inside. It was hard for the Seahawks to control the paint or the boards in the early going.  Though Boothbay shot just 7-for-20 in the first half, Lisbon shot only 7-for-30. The Greyhounds missed their first seven of the game and hit just one of its first seven in the second. Lisbon was also plagued with foul trouble when Thomas and Campbell each picked up two fouls in the first.

After a 10-10 first, Boothbay opened the lead late in the second. Caron  and Alexa Andrews made it 22-15 before a Mia Durgin shot cut it to 22-17.

Though Lisbon missed its first eight shots to start the third, a 6-2 run cut the lead to three. The Greyhounds had some momentum but just couldn’t maintain it. Though Boothbay couldn’t dominate inside as it had hoped, some clutch shots by Caron did the trick from the outside.

After opening up the six-point lead to start the fourth, Boothbay finished it off with some nice execution and free throw shooting down the stretch.

“My kids showed a lot of poise from the middle of the third to the end,” said Wolotsky. “I didn’t call timeout and tell them to pull it out. I just said, ‘Time and score,’ and they did a nice job with that.”
