JAY — Richard “Duke” J. Dupont, 82, a lifelong resident of Jay, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, Jan. 1.

He was born March 17, 1929, in Jay, the son of Alfred and Julia (Phillipon) Dupont. He was a 1948 graduate of Jay High School.

On Aug. 1, 1949, at St. Joseph Church in Lewiston, he married Stella Brown of Auburn. Stella passed away Sept. 12, 1998. Duke worked for IP at the Otis and Androscoggin Mills in Jay, retiring after 43 years in 1987.

He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. Duke was member of the IP Quarter Century Club and a devoted member of the Sons of AmVets Lane-Dube Post 33 in Jay, serving on the firing squad and volunteering his time with Special Olympics.

He is survived by his sons, Richard M. Dupont and Gary P. Dupont, both of Jay; his daughters, Sandra A. Wells and her husband, Mike, of North Yarmouth and Jean M. Wills of Olivia, N.C.; five grandchildren, Lisa Wells, Kristen Wells Arbour, Katy Boyd, Joseph Boyd and Tom “T” Wills; five great-grandchildren, Owen Whitlow, Dylan Whitlow, Hunter Boyd, Braxton Boyd and Joshua Arbour; his brother, Julien Dupont of Mount Vernon; and special friend, Priscilla Savage of Jay.

He was predeceased by his son, David H. Dupont; brothers, Armand, Yvan, Emilien, Loyola, Laurier, Real and Dollard Dupont; and his sister, Claudette Ryder.
