LIVERMORE FALLS — A local man ended up with an additional charge after police tried to arrest him on two warrants related to motor vehicle violations on Sunday, Livermore police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said Tuesday.

Sgt. Steve Allen saw William Norton, 57, of Livermore Falls, driving on Main Street on New Year’s Day, and knew that he had warrants out on him, Steward said.

Allen stopped the vehicle and had put handcuffs on Norton, who was initially cooperative but then began to struggle with the officer and went out of control, he said.

Norton physically resisted arrest and threatened to harm the officer, Steward said.

Allen called for backup from Jay police and Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier responded.

Norton was arrested on a new charge of failure to submit to arrest by force and the two warrants, Steward said.

Before Fournier arrived, two witnesses who saw the incident offered to help Allen but Allen turned them down because he knew Fournier would be arriving shortly, he said.

Allen told the chief he wished he knew the names of the citizens because he would have liked to thank them for offering to help, Steward said.
