Ski for free

AUBURN — Throughout January everyone is invited to ski or ride for free every Friday from 5 p.m. until close at Lost Valley Ski Resort courtesy of L-A Harley-Davidson of Lewiston. To kick off the event, the L-A Harley Band will play a concert in the lodge at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6.

CNA classes

TURNER — MSAD 52 Adult and Community Education has announced the start of a new sesion of CNA classes beginning Jan. 17.

Interviews for a limited number of slots will take place the week of Jan. 9. Call for an application and to reserve a slot.

The cost of the class includes textbooks and CPR certification.

SAD 52 will also offer a ServSafe certification course, an industry standard certification for those in the food and restaurant industry, on Feb. 21 and 23 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Turner Adult Learning Center. As of Jan. 18, 2011, the state of Maine requires that every establishment that serves cooked or perishable foods employ at least one certified food protection manager. ServSafe certification fulfills this training requirement. The fee for this class includes textbook and exam.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Jan. 3 were as follows: first, Dick Allen and Luke Merry; second, Jan Arey and Linda Leotsakos; third, Jeanine Kivus and David Lock; fourth, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; fifth, Kathleen Burden and Fred Letourneau; first in B and C, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; second, Cynthia and Bill Clifford.

La Leche League

AUBURN — Expectant women and breastfeeding mothers are invited to the La Leche League meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 102 Bennett Ave. This month’s discussion will focus on “The Advantages of Breastfeeding For Mother and Baby.”

Pregnancy is an ideal time to begin attending meetings, and mothers find continued attendance provides support throughout their breastfeeding experience. Babies are always welcome. ‘L.L. Bean, The Man

AUBURN — Local author James Witherell will discuss the truth behind a Maine icon as he shares from his book, “L.L. Bean: The Man and His Company,” at noon Thursday, Jan. 12, at Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.

Witherell newest book begins with the Bean family, young Leon Bean’s love of the outdoors, his first forays into sales and then his development of the iconic L.L. Bean boot. The book then examines Bean’s phenomenal growth under grandson Leon Gorman.

Witherell is a master Maine Guide and the creator of hiking maps for Acadia National Park and Baxter State Park. Also an avid cyclist, he is the author of “Bicycle History” and is working on a book about the Tour de France.

AUBURN – American Legion Post 31 will host a public dance featuring The Veggies from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Jan. 13, at the post home, 431 Washington St. The public is welcome; cost is donations at the door.

Basketball free throw

AUBURN — The Holy Cross Knights of Columbus Council 12,652 invites all boys and girls ages 10 through 14 to participate in a basketball free throw championship competition on Saturday, Jan. 14, at St. Dominic Academy Auburn Campus, 121 Gracelawn Road.

The event is free of charge. Registration runs from 8 to 9 a.m. Proof of age required at time registration, no exceptions. Competition takes place from 9 to 11 a.m.
