TURNER — Selectmen, in a meeting that lasted until nearly midnight Tuesday, approved a staff recommendation to increase evening hours at the Town Office.

The office will be open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays, beginning Feb. 6.

Previously, the only evening hours were 6 to 7 p.m., when selectmen were meeting.

The board announced that budget hearings would be held at 6 p.m. at the Town Office on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout January. The hearings are open to the public.

Selectmen entered into an agreement with the Maine Department of Transportation to maintain a traffic light at Route 4 and Snell Hill Road where Hannaford Bros. Co. is building a supermarket.

Company real estate representative Tyler Sterling assured the board the town would be reimbursed for all expenses for installing and maintaining the light. He said the store will be 36,000 square feet, will include a full-service pharmacy and will employ about 100 full- and part-time associates.

* A heavy load limit order was approved to give the road commissioner authority to post roads when they begin to thaw.

* Selectmen authorized the Public Works Department to look for a 40-foot container to store equipment.

* The board approved a proposed Property Assessed Clean Energy ordinance so homeowners can obtain low-interest loans for energy-saving projects. The ordinance makes it clear there is no liability to the town from these loans. A public hearing and town vote on the measure will be held in February.

* After months of negotiating, selectmen signed a three-year contract with Mid- Maine Waste Action Corp. of Auburn for waste disposal. The contract price is $67.65 per ton the first year, which is $10 per ton less than MMWAC’s first offer and more than $30 per ton less than MMWAC member towns pay.

* A public hearing will be held in February to consider changing zoning for lots along Route 4 near Beals Pond. The portion of the affected lots along Route 4 are now zoned commercial. The proposed change would increase the depth of the commercial zone. Beals Pond is also known as Crystal Pond.

The next selectmen meeting is scheduled for Jan. 17.
