FARMINGTON — An explosion on Bailey Hill Road on Monday night was likely caused by a homemade pyrotechnic device, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Investigators said some of the debris will be sent to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ lab for further analysis. It appears to investigators that the device was made up of paper products, consistent with homemade fireworks, Stephen McCausland, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman, said Wednesday.
Farmington police closed a section of the road Monday night after a resident saw a vehicle in the road, heard two men talking and what sounded like gunshots. The woman jumped on her ATV and drove out to the road to confront the men, who drove away heading west toward town.
When the men reached the crest of the hill before Bailey Farm, she saw them throw an object from the vehicle, Farmington police Chief Jack Peck said Tuesday. She saw the wick and fire trailing from the object, turned around and went home to call police who found the device in the road. It did not explode.
The State Police Bomb Squad was called and the road opened after they determined it was safe. The explosive was turned over to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Farmington Police Department at 778-6311.
