Board: Selectmen

Met: Tuesday night

Snowmen and women wanted

Issue: Two of the town’s three regular snowplow drivers are out on medical leave.

The scoop: That leaves one driver and several reserve drivers for the next snowstorm.

Up next: Town Manager Andrew Gilmore is working on a contingency plan and the town is looking to line up more reserve drivers.

Speaking up

Issue: Selectmen updated the Rules Governing the Board of Selectmen when it comes to speaking from the audience at meetings.

The scoop: Residents and nonresidents can speak from the floor if the chairman recognizes them. The chairman has the right not to recognize people who, if recognized, can only speak twice on one topic and are now limited to 5 minutes, at most.

Fishing snag

Issue: Fish for a Cure organizers asked selectmen to waive a $250 mass-gathering permit, the need for a surety bond and the need for a public hearing.

The scoop: Selectmen, initially, said no. The pike derby is scheduled for Jan. 28 and organizers should have gotten a request in 40 days before the event. There were also issues with parking last year and cars being towed.

Up next: Selectmen narrowly approved an amended motion to waive the gathering permit fee and the need for a surety bond, but they will hold a public hearing at their next meeting.

Test run

Issue: The Fire Department’s Engine 4 had been down, with neighboring Wales helping out.

The scoop: Repairs were estimated at $200 to $10,000, and ended up costing $1,200.

Up next: The truck will go out for a test run.
