100 years ago, 1912

At a special meeting of the Lewiston Merchants’ Association held Friday afternoon  there was a unanimous expression in opposition to the closing of the so-called “Private Way,” from the foot of Ash Street to Lincoln Street. The matter of opening a street there will be taken up with the City Government. The special meeting was called by President Cronin and was held in the rooms of the Lewiston Board of Trade.

50 years ago, 1962

A meeting of the Sparkettes was held last evening at the home of Mrs. Victor Alexander, 11 Granite St., Auburn.

During the business session plans were discussed to hold an outing in the future. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Robert Holt, Mrs. James Darling and Mrs. Harland Proctor.

The next meeting will be held at the residence of Mrs. Robert Deschene in Auburn.

25 years ago, 1987

Members of the Lewiston Fire Department’s union voted Monday night to refuse to man Sabattus Engine 1, claiming the truck is old and unsafe.

Marcel Lessard, president of Local 785 of the National Association of Firefighters, said the union voted not to man the engine, which has been on loan to Lewiston from the Sabattus Fire Department, where it was a spare truck, since November. They maintain it is unreliable.
