CARTHAGE — Elwin A. Brown, 67, of Carthage, died Thursday, Jan. 5, at his home.

He was born on April 14, 1944, in Rumford, the son of Alvin and Lillian Mason Brown. He was raised in Carthage and attended Carthage and Dixfield schools. On Feb. 22, 1963, he married Linda Virgin of Mexico. Together they built their home and raised their family in Carthage.

Elwin was a self-employed logger and managed a family farm for many years. His logging days started with the White Brothers of Carthage and later for Timberlands of Dixfield. He then started his own logging business in 1980. He truly enjoyed logging and the people who worked in the industry.

A very talented craftsmen, he was very good at working the metal and mechanical trades, as well, as wood working. He applied his craft at not only maintaining his own equipment for his business, but later restoring antique tractors and trucks. He really enjoyed the search and dickering for the equipment, as well as, making new acquaintances in his travels.

With his woodworking skills, he would often surprise his wife, Linda, with gifts from this skill such as a new kitchen table or China cabinet. As an outdoorsman, he enjoyed deer hunting when not working in the woods.

Later he stopped hunting and started caring for the deer herd on his woodlot. He spent many countless hours studying the deer and their habitat and became very knowledgable of the white tail deer.

In his later years, he enjoyed managing his woodlot, working on his garden and fruit trees, and maintaining his fields. He also enjoyed the family gatherings at the camp he built and the company of his loyal springer spaniel, Max.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Wanda Flagg and her husband, Ted, of Carthage; three sons, Mark Brown his wife, Tammy, of Carthage, Asa Brown and his partner, Lisa Scribner, of Carthage and Jody Brown and his wife, Maria, of Dixfield; grandchildren, Carissa O’Connor, Ryan Flagg, Isiah Brown, Noah Brown, Brendon Colford, Zachary Brown, Jack Brown, Gus Brown and Cole Brown; and sister, Gloria Mayo of Augusta.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alvin and Lillian Brown; and sister, Glennis Averill of Carthage.
