VIENNA — A Jay woman died Thursday when the vehicle she was a passenger in went off the road and struck a tree on snow-covered Route 41, state police said.
Patricia Tardif, 74, died at the scene, Maine State Police Trooper Diane Perkins-Vance said. Attempts by a NorthStar Emergency Medical Services crew to resuscitate Tardif at the scene were unsuccessful.
Tardif was a passenger in a 2009 Suzuki four-wheel-drive driven by her husband, Alfred Tardif, 51, of Jay, Perkins-Vance said.
Alfred Tardif was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington with nonlife-threatening injuries, Perkins-Vance said.
Both Tardifs were wearing seat belts and the air bags deployed.
Tardif’s vehicle was going too fast for the road conditions, Perkins-Vance said. The speed limit there is 50 mph.
The couple was heading toward Mount Vernon Village on their way to Augusta, the trooper said. The vehicle slid off the road on a sharp corner into a ditch, and into a tree. The right front passenger side of the vehicle hit the tree.
Perkins-Vance was assisted at the scene by Mount Vernon and Vienna fire and rescue.
