AUBURN — A Portland man who was shot by police after a car chase pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges stemming from that incident and an unrelated robbery.
Kyle Corey, 43, appeared in Androscoggin County Superior Court dressed in an orange jail suit, his hands cuffed. He had been moved to Somerset County Jail in Madison recently after Androscoggin County Jail officials found evidence that Corey and another prisoner had planned an escape.
Corey pleaded not guilty to a felony robbery charge, punishable by up to 30 years in prison. Police said Corey pushed a 77-year-old woman to the ground and snatched her purse as she was walking into a Shaw’s Supermarket on East Avenue.
Corey also said he wasn’t guilty of four felonies related to an hourlong car chase in November that began at Walnut and Bartlett streets in Lewiston and ended at the Lincoln Street parking garage, police said. Corey was a passenger in the stolen Ford Focus that crashed into a fence at a parking lot on Chestnut Street.
After the driver fled on foot, Corey got into the driver’s seat and knocked down an officer at the scene, according to police. The car lodged on a fence and Corey was taken into custody. He was shot in the shoulder by a member of one of the three law enforcement agencies involved in the chase and subsequent standoff.
Corey was indicted in that incident earlier this month by an Androscoggin County grand jury on a charge of aggravated assault, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He also was indicted on charges of assault on an officer, reckless conduct and receiving stolen property, each punishable by up to five years in prison.
Defense lawyer Richard Charest represented Corey at his arraignment Wednesday, filling in for James Howaniec. Charest said his client would argue bail terms later, when Howaniec becomes available.
Corey continued to be held in lieu of $60,000 cash bail
He was implicated along with another inmate in a plot to break out of the Androscoggin County Jail on Dec. 21 after law enforcement officials received a tip that led them to a broken window in the the medium-security area of the jail, apparently intended as the escape route. That incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
