Matt Harmon collected two more recent victories for the University of Southern Maine men’s indoor track and field team.

Harmon, a senior captain from Auburn (Edward Little), led each of his throwing events and hoisted the Huskies to victory in their own Southern Maine Invitational II on Saturday, Jan. 7.

It was the second time this season that Harmon won both the 35-pound weight throw (50 feet, 4 ½ inches) and shot put (45-6 1/4).

In his first meet of the year Dec. 10, Harmon set school records in both disciplines and established qualifying for the New England Division III Championships in February and the ECAC Division III Championships in March.

Also scoring points for Southern Maine was freshman Kevin Desmond of Monmouth.

Desmond’s distance medley relay team snagged second place, and his individual effort in the 600 meters was good for third.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Freshman Marissa Welch, leader of the last girls’ basketball team in Livermore Falls High School, has continued her double-digit scoring and rebounding pace at Southern Maine Community College.

Welch chalked up 11 of each last month in the Seawolves’ 56-33 rout of rival CMCC.

In more recent action, the six-foot forward scored 10 points and tore down 16 rebounds Wednesday in a 51-39 victory over Holyoke Community College. SMCC remained unbeaten at 8-0 in the Yankee Conference and improved to 12-4 overall with the triumph.

Welch erupted for 24 points and 20 rebounds in SMCC’s closest win of the season to date, 62-60 over the University of Maine at Machias, and 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 48-40 victory over St. Joseph (Vt.). She also was the leading scorer in recent losses to Briarcliffe and John Abbott.

Jackie Reis of Bethel (Gould Academy) bolstered the Beavers with a pair of podium finishes. Reis was third in slalom races both Saturday and Sunday.

Marisa Hanning oif Hebron (Oxford Hills) was in the top 25 both days. Seven schools competed, including the University of Maine, Boston University and Holy Cross.

Alex Rose of Fayette (Livermore Falls) topped the Farmington men’s team on Saturday, finishing 10th.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Bates graduate Sylvan Ellefson stole the show at the recent U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships in Rumford, finishing third in the 15-kilometer men’s freestyle.

The Bobcats’ current roster represented itself nicely, too.

Sophomore Jordan Buetow was a strong 11th in the 1.6 freestyle sprints and 37th out of 197 men in the 15K freestyle.

Bates opens its season at its home course — the same Black Mountain layout — next weekend.
