PORTLAND — American singer-songwriter Joan Osborne, best known for her song “One of Us,” will perform, accompanied only by piano, at One Longfellow Square on Feb. 24.
Comfortable in rock, soul, blues, country and jazz, Osborne toured with The Dead for two years as lead singer. She was also featured vocalist with Motown supergroup The Funk Brothers on tour and in the documentary film about the band, “Standing in the Shadows of Motown.”
She is working on her next studio release, a collection of soul and blues covers by the likes of Al Green, Muddy Waters, and Ike & Tina Turner. She has also been working with new band Trigger Hippy, which includes two former members of the Black Crowes.
Originally from Kentucky, Osborne’s career took off after she moved to New York and became a regular on the lower Manhattan club circuit. Her 1995 Mercury Records debut, “Relish,” contained the Top 10 smash “One of Us,” as well as the single “Right Hand Man” and a cover of the Bob Dylan ballad “Man in the Long Black Coat.”
In the wake of that album’s success, Osborne appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone and was nominated for seven Grammy awards.
In the years since, she has released another half-dozen studio discs ranging from straight R&B to country music to more pop-oriented work. Osborne has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and on-stage with The Waybacks at Merlefest.
In 2008, she reunited with her “Relish” team and recorded the soulful rock roots album, “Little Wild One.” She was introduced to a whole new generation when “One of Us” was performed by the cast of “Glee.”
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets, $35, are available by calling 761-1757 and at the box office in Suite 201 at 181 State St.
