HARRISON – For the first time in recent history, selectmen received nine bids for a number of mowing, cleaning and maintenance contracts last week.
Usually only two or three companies or people submit bids for the work, which includes mowing cemeteries, taking care of the town’s RADR athletic field, roadside mowing and maintaining parks and beaches.
“I’ve never seen this many bids,” Selectman Lisa Villa said at Thursday’s selectmen’s meeting when the bids were opened and read.
“I guess it’s the economy,” she added.
Referring to administrative assistant Mary Tremblay, Town Manager Bud Finch said, “Mary has kept these in sealed envelopes. The only information people had the right to know was last year’s bid amounts. That’s public information.”
Selectmen followed the town manager’s advice to change the length of the contracts this time from the town’s fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) to a calendar year so that the work isn’t split in the middle of the season. The contracts were advertised several times in the newspaper, Finch said.
No bid awards were made after they were opened however, because there were questions about several of them. Selectmen asked Finch to review them, contact the bidders for clarification, if necessary, and make a recommendation at the next meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 2.
According to the town manager and Tremblay, the bids that were submitted include:
