WILTON — Police say the cause of a double fatal accident involving three vehicles on Route 2 near the Farmington town line late Monday afternoon remains under investigation.

Slick, icy roads are believed to be part of the cause, Sgt. Richard Billian of the Wilton Police Department said.

Two people hurt in the crash were in stable condition Tuesday afternoon at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Billian said.

David Miller, 44, of Wilton was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck east toward Farmington about 4 p.m. Monday when his vehicle collided head-on with a 2004 Sebring heading west and driven by Joseph Breton, 36, of Jay. Breton died at the scene.

Miller’s passenger, his mother, Meta Sevigny, 80, of Farmington was also fatally injured in the crash.

After the initial collision, Breton’s vehicle went back toward the right and struck a 2000 Saturn driven by Thomas Lake, 50, of Jay, Billian said. Lake was not injured and his vehicle had only minor damage.

Breton’s passenger, Carlton Elliott, 22, suffered a neck injury and was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar ambulance and transported by ambulance to CMMC in Lewiston.

Miller was also taken to FMH and transported by ambulance to CMMC.

Miller’s and Breton’s vehicles were totaled. They were hauled from the scene and impounded by Collins Wrecker service. In any fatal accident, the vehicles are impounded during the investigation, Billian said.

As the community learned of the fatal accident Tuesday, friends of Breton remembered him as a loving father with a big heart who would help anyone.

Breton was living in Jay now, but has always lived in this area where he’s taken several different jobs, Katy Botka-Quirrion of Livermore Falls said Tuesday.

“He was always pretty happy even in rough times,” she said. “He was very pleasant and would help anyone do anything … even when he needed help himself.”

While she remembers him when they both lived in Chesterville and rode a school bus together to Mt. Blue schools, she remembered him most from the relationship he had with his daughter.

“He was a wonderful father to his daughter,” she said. “You’d often see him and his daughter together.”

Breton attended Mt. Blue High School in the mid-1990s and also has a young son, she said.

Family members were contacted but were not ready to talk about their son and brother.

Sevigny lost her husband, Marius, in December 2011 after 30 years of marriage, according to his obituary.

They lived on the New Vineyard Road in Farmington for many years, neighbor Cindy Bartlett said.

“She was such a hard worker who had lots of energy,” she said. “She was very kind and giving and loved her family very much.”

Sevigny was a homemaker who did beautiful tole painting, worked in her flower garden and helped her son Gilbert varnish cabinets that he made, she said.

“She was a sweet lady, extremely polite,” Tony Nazar of Wilton also said of Sevigny. He met her several years ago while working in a local pharmacy.
