FARMINGTON — Free tax preparation in greater Franklin County has started, although Friday’s Western Maine CA$H Coalition kickoff was canceled due to inclement weather.

A service now celebrating its 10th anniversary, WMCC provides free tax preparation and resources to help families of low to moderate income find ways to save and make the most of their money.

WMCC is one of eight coalitions throughout the state that offer free tax preparation using volunteers who receive training to become certified by the Internal Revenue Service in order to offer all eligible tax credits.

Last year more than $7 million in federal refunds were received by participants in the free tax preparation program through CA$H Maine.

In Franklin County, tax preparation began Jan. 26 and concludes on March 24. The tax site is open from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays on the third floor of the Roberts Learning Center at the University of Maine at Farmington.

While walk-ins will be served as time permits, WMCC asks participants to call for an appointment to ensure a tax preparer is available.

Appointments may be made by calling 491-3747.
