CARRABASSETT— Celebrated Maine author Elizabeth Peavey will bring her humorous and heartbreaking one-woman show, “My Mother’s Clothes Are Not My Mother,” to The Rack on Friday, Feb. 10.

The show, which premiered to a series of sell-out houses at the St. Lawrence Performing Arts Center in Portland last fall, deals with the challenges of losing a parent and deciding what to do with all your family’s stuff.

For months, Peavey avoided wading through her late mother’s things. But when her mom’s condo sells, she is forced to reckon with its contents. As she does, objects surface, triggering memories and emotions.

Possessions she once thought would be easy to chuck — the Polynesian hors d’oeuvre platter, the milk-glass and tea-cup collections, the kinda Colonial decorative scoop — suddenly take on epic stature, forcing the question: How do we know when to let go?

Peavey is the author of “Outta My Way: An Odd Life Lived Loudly” and “Maine & Me: 10 Years of Down East Adventures,” awarded the Maine Literary Award for Best Maine-themed Book.

Her essays and articles appear frequently in Down East magazine, where she has been a contributing editor since 1997. Her former monthly humor column, “Outta My Yard,” can be found at thebollard.com. She has taught public speaking at the University of Southern Maine since 1993 and has served as guest lecturer of creative nonfiction at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Peavey’s latest book, “Glorious Slow Going: Maine Stories of Art, Friendship and Adventure,” is a collaboration with renowned Maine landscape painter and Stratton resident Marguerite Robichaux.

The Rack’s new performance space, which occupies the pub’s former brewery and seats 125, adds an additional stage to the BBQ restaurant and nightspot at 5016 Access Road.

“My Mother’s Clothes” will be presented at 6 p.m. The Rack is at 5016 Access Road. Tickets, $15, are available be calling 237-2211.
