JAY — The town has received 17 applications for a finance clerk position and more are expected for the 20-hour-per-week job, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said Wednesday.

The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. Friday.

The full-time deputy financial director’s position was eliminated Sept. 30 for financial and budgeting reasons, Cushman said in October 2011.

The position and the need for it were discussed during budget preparation for the 2011-12 year. The Town Office had handled finances for the Jay School Department, but Jay schools have consolidated with Livermore and Livermore Falls to make Regional School Unit 73, and those matters are now handled there.

Selectmen and the Budget Committee approved funding the deputy finance position for the year this past spring, knowing that the position would be assessed after the beginning of the new fiscal year to see if it was needed.

Since the position was eliminated, Cushman said Wednesday that Finance Director Lisa Bryant has been swamped.

“When this position was cut at budget time last year, we were aware that we might have to have more assistance in the office,” Cushman said.
