OXFORD — The following items were discussed at the Feb. 16 meeting of the Board of Selectmen:
Lake Street pier
At the instruction of the Board of Selectmen, Town Manager Michael Chammings researched the feasibility of installing a pier in Thompson Lake off the end of Lake Street. On Thursday, Chammings submitted a proposal from Main-Land Development Services for between $30,000 and $34,000.
That figure includes design, permitting, mapping and construction. Selectmen agreed the figure was high and decided to meet with an engineer from Main-Land to discuss the project further.
Thompson Lake
Kathy Cain, co-president of the Thompson Lakes Environmental Association and Sandy Roderick, a member of the TLEA Board of Directors, asked the town to reinstate its yearly $4,500 contribution to the nonprofit group.
Cain said the town didn’t pay the yearly contribution last year, and that TLEA was appealing to the town to give again. Cain said that in light of Oxford’s not contributing, other towns could decide not to help either.
The group works to keep milfoil, an invasive plant, and pollution that can increase algae growth out of Thompson Lake. Cain said their work in keeping the lake clean would help Oxford remain a tourist destination. If the lake becomes polluted with algae blooms, a condition known as China Lake Syndrome, Cain said cleanup can cost “tens of thousands of dollars.”
Roderick, who is a sixth-grade teacher at Oxford Elementary School, said the funds also help get local students engaged in conservation work. She said recent funding cuts forced TLEA to stop giving a $500 scholarship to local high school students.
Donations
Selectmen voted to accept $1,450 in donations. Douglas Miles gave $50 to Keep Oxford Warm, and John Crumpton gave $1,000 to Keep Oxford Warm. Oxford Hills Funeral Services gave $400 to the town’s Fire Department equipment account. Chammings said Crumpton also gave $1,000 to the Helping Hands Food Pantry.
Cruiser bids
Selectmen accepted a $2,799 bid to sell an old Oxford Police Department cruiser. Harry Sims of Paris bought the 2006 Crown Victoria, which has 144,000 miles.
