NEW GLOUCESTER — Selectmen at a special meeting on Tuesday appointed three residents to serve on the newly formed town Water District.

The board met with four of the seven applicants who responded to a recent request following approval by the Maine Legislature creating the district, and a vote by residents living within the proposed geographic area of the Upper Gloucester area that the public water system will serve.

Jim Giffune, Lawrence Zuckerman and Steven Johnson were appointed by a show of hands from motions made by selectmen.

Jean Couturier, Beverly Cadigan, Chris Rheault and Wanda Brissette were thanked for their interest in serving.

Selectmen will appoint their picks to one-, two- and three-year terms as the first appointees to the district.

Voters will choose candidates at the polls, once the initial terms expire.
