Lots of talk and fear going around town about the high gas prices. Last week, gas prices jumped 12 cents per gallon at many service stations.

Here is my suggestion on how to slow or end the rise in price:

State tax on a gallon of gasoline in Maine is 31.5 cents. Federal tax on a gallon of gasoline in Maine is 18.4 cents. Combined, the total tax is 50.7 cents per gallon.

Currently, the gas price around town averages $3.74 per gallon. Now, if the governor could proclaim, in the interest of slowing down the spiraling prices, a temporary 25 percent drop in the state tax, the price would drop 7.8 cents or $3.66 per gallon.

Call the 25 percent temporary reduction a state of emergency.
