FARMINGTON — A contractor and maintenance crew at Franklin Printing on the Wilton Road discovered a fire in the motor of the trash compactor located on the west side of the building about noon on Sunday.
Farmington Deputy Fire Chief Clyde Ross said the fire was reported 11:58 a.m. Sunday. About 20 firefighters responded to the blaze and cleared the scene about 1:45 p.m.
The contractor, working on the east side of the building, said he kept smelling something like the smell of wire burning. Ross said the man eventually called the Fire Department when he noticed smoke getting thicker in the building.
Ross said the blaze was contained to an outdoor trash compactor/industrial paper shredder. Smoke was pouring from the top of the large compactor unit and flames were seen coming from the bottom when fire crews arrived, according to Ross. No damage was reported to the main building itself.
A cause of the fire is unknown at this time, Ross said, adding that the blaze remains under investigation.
