After a spirited discussion, members of the Lewiston board of trade, Tuesday evening, voted to have a committee from its organization meet with a committee from the Lewiston Merchants’ association in regard to forming a chamber of commerce.
50 years ago, 1962
Lewiston High School students, in ear-piercing ovations and screaming raise-the-roof type exuberation, showed their appreciation of their state championship hockey team this morning. By defeating St. Dominic’s High School last night at the Central Maine Youth Center, the Blue Devils are now qualified to enter into the New England Hockey Tournament Providence, R.I.
25 years ago, 1987
Bethany Burnell of Mechanic Falls has submitted the winning name in the YWCA’s L-A FEST Name the Bear contest. From now on, the country’s biggest polar bear will be known as “Splash the Y’s Bear.” Ward Bros. of Lewiston donated the bear to the YWCA. Bethany will receive a small version of the Y’s Bear and a YWCA membership for her winning entry. Splash the Y’s Bear will be coming alive for the Friday night Fashion Theatre production, and the L-A FEST’s Saturday activities. Splash will greet Y visitors, give out awards, help to serve pancakes and chicken dinners, and finally, dance the first dance at the Showcase of the Stars Dance Saturday evening.
