NORWAY — March marks one year of planning Free Community Suppers at the Second Congregational Church, UCC. Born out of concern for the poor economy, hungry students seen at area schools and lonely seniors who could not afford restaurant meals, members Deb Ladner and Pam Davison began a new mission for the church in early April 2011. They hoped to make a difference in our local community.

Having no idea if anyone would come to supper and if they did, would there be enough food, they served the first free supper on April 29. For the past 11 months, the monthly suppers have been a resounding success. In February alone, more than 150 community members of all ages arrived early and stayed late for a ham and baked bean supper, good conversation and delicious desserts made by Bruce Davison.

Financial support for the free meals has been provided by donations from members, local businesses and concerned community members who applaud the suppers and their contribution to the health and welfare of the community.

Ladner said, “I absolutely knew we were doing something right, when a family of six walked here on a very cold January night from South Paris for a hot meal. We fed them and then sent them home with containers of hot soup to keep their hands warm and for their lunch the next day.”

In March, two suppers will be held at the church, 205 Main St. The first on Friday, March 16, will be a fundraiser for the many missions of the church, which include worship, music, Christian education and most recently the community free suppers. The chef, Foster Shibles, will with many helpers create a delicious boiled dinner for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The menu will include corned beef, cabbage, beets, potatoes, turnips, onions, rolls and homemade pie. The price will be $8. Takeout will be available.

The second supper will be a free supper on Friday, March 23. The menu will include meatloaf, veggies and desserts. Davison, moderator of the church, said at a recent church meeting, “We really hope that the entire community will support both of our suppers. We need to fundraise and we also need to continue to provide free meals. These two meals will require a lot of time, effort, resources and love from our busy congregation.” She also noted that there will be a one year anniversary celebration free supper in April.

The Second Congregational Church, U.C.C. is an open and affirming congregation, welcoming all to worship, study and join in fellowship.
