KINGFIELD — The Kingfield POPS will present three of Prince Edward Island’s top performers at Kingfield and Strong schools on Thursday, March 15. The concerts are free and the public is invited.

Fiddler and founder of the PEI Fiddle Camp, Ward MacDonald, keyboardist Ryan MacNeil and piper Ben Miller will perform at 10 a.m. at the Strong Elementary School for students from Phillips and Strong and at 12:45 p.m. at the Kingfield Elementary School for the Stratton and Kingfield students.

The trio is touring Maine this week, performing, working with school groups and conducting workshops for all ages at Skye Theatre’s PEI Fiddle Camp.

MacDonald, MacNeil and Miller will play the fiery dance tunes of Prince Edward Island, share the melody of a Scottish air and tell the stories about Acadian music that inspire them as musicians.

MacDonald grew up in the Scottish fiddling traditions of Prince Edward Island. His playing reflects four generations of family fiddling and is spiced with a blend of Cape Breton, Acadian and Irish influences. As an emerging composer, MacDonald has traveled the world with his music, taught and performed at fiddle camps in Canada and the U.S. and works to promote and sustain traditional music.

MacNeil, of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, also grew up in a family with deep musical roots. He has performed with his family band, the “Barra MacNeils,” formed a Celtic fusion group called Slainte Mhath, played keyboards with the dance show “The Stepcrew” and toured Japan and the U.S. with Ireland’s band, “The Chieftains.”

Miller is a player of Scottish small pipes and Border pipes whose repertoire and style draw on the Gaelic traditions of Western Scotland, the Canadian Maritimes and Ireland. He has been an instructor at the Piper’s Gathering in Vermont and the Maine Pipes and Fiddle Weekend. Originally from the Lake George area of upstate New York, Miller is pursuing a post-graduate degree in Scottish ethnology in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The concerts are made possible due to the Kingfield POPS partnership with the Skye Theatre Performing Arts Centre and a donation of the Morse Charitable Trust to the Kingfield POPS. The POPS mission is to provide live music for the youth and communities in the western mountain region.
