FARMINGTON — The cause of a brush fire in Farmington Falls on Thursday afternoon may never be known.

A small field at Route 2 and Philbrick Road about 2 p.m. came close to an empty mobile home on the lot at 1123 Farmington Falls Road. The fire started to melt the vinyl siding on the end of the home, Deputy Chief Clyde Ross of Farmington Fire and Rescue said.

Although a Maine Forest Ranger searched the charred grass for clues to the cause, Ross said it was hard to tell. It could be as simple as the bright hot sun hitting a glass bottle or someone tossing a cigarette as they passed by, he said.

Along with the Farmington department, New Sharon and Chesterville departments were called to the scene. Mutual aid from other towns was cancelled as the flames were quickly extinguished, he said.

Several motorists called 911 to report the fire.

According to town records, the property is owned by Randy Brown with a mailing address in Mexico, Maine.  No one has lived in the home for some time.
