Chantalle Lavertu of Lewiston was undefeated in doubles play and picked up a pair of significant singles for the Bowdoin women’s tennis team in the Polar Bears’ spring trip to California.

No. 15 Bowdoin went 4-3 on the swing, including a loss to Division I Cal State Northridge. The Polar Bears tripped up two nationally ranked D3 teams, No. 18 Sewanee and No. 28 Chapman.

Lavertu, a junior, teamed uop with Emma Lewis for a 4-0 mark at No. 3 doubles. She also prevailed twice at No. 4 singles.

BIG BEGINNINGS

Telstar graduate Kayla Merrill has kicked off her Husson softball career with a flourish.

Merrill is 5-for-11 at the plate, good for a .455 clip, through her first seven games.

She also picked up her first pitching victory with a six-hit shutout of Catholic University on March 6, striking out two and walking one. Merrill has yet to allow an earned run in nine innings of work.

STILL COMPETING

After completing four successful years with the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team in February 2011, Kaylie DeMillo of Jay is using a final semester of eligibility to play softball.

DeMillo picked up her first collegiate hit and the Huskies’ only RBI of the game Friday in a 9-1 loss to Chicago to open Southern Maine’s spring trip in Clermont, Fla.

The hit was one of only four on the afternoon for USM, which lost 10-0 to Elmhurst to complete a doubleheader sweep.

STATE’S GREATS

Bates basketball had three players selected for all-state honors announced this past week.

Senior John Squires received first-team recognition from the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association after nearly doubling his scoring output to 13.7 points per game as a senior. Squires was an all-NESCAC performer in both football and basketball this academic year.

Graham Safford was named to the men’s state all-rookie team, while Molly Brown was chosen women’s rookie of the year.

SHE SHOOTS, SHE SCORES

Amie Daniels of Lewiston chalked up five goals and an assist to power the University of Maine at Farmington women’s lacrosse team past Wheelock, 22-5, in a recent contest.

Wilton’s Abbey Gilbert (Mt. Blue) added four goals for the Beavers in their first of the season. Oxford Hills graduate Marisa Hanning also has an early-season goal for UMF.

EAGLES ATTACK

Husson sophomores Stephanie Roux of Greene (Leavitt) and Emily Child of Mexico (Mountain Valley) each scored a goal Saturday in the Eagles’ 17-5 road rout of Massachusetts Maritime in women’s lacrosse.

The Eagles scored the first 10 goals of the game en route to their second victory in six tries this spring.
