AUBURN — Candace Hall was the winning pitcher in both halves of Central Maine Community School’s softball doubleheader sweep of Vermont Tech, 5-3 and 5-0, on Saturday.

Hall allowed three hits while striking out 12 in the opener. She pitched to contact and registered the shutout in the nightcap, surrendering six hits while walking only one and fanning three. The Telstar product also had two hits.

Taylor Fillion delivered two hits in each game for the Mustangs (2-0). Jordan Brasier ripped a two-run triple and scored on a throwing error at the end of the play to propel CM in the first game.

Kaisha Rodriguez also was a repeat hitter in Game 1.

Baseball

Bryant sweeps Maine

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The University of Maine baseball team fell in both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Bryant University, 4-1 and 8-3.

Maine fell to 7-14. Bryant inched above the .500 mark at 11-10.

Colin Gay went 1-for-2 in Game 1 with an RBI for Maine. Ian Leisenheimer went 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in Game 2.

Bryant jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener. Jamie Skagerland led the uprising with a two-run double.

Gay produced Maine’s run after a triple by Michael Fransoso.

Starter Jeffrey Gibbs took the loss for the Black Bears, dropping his record to 0-4 on the year. Gibbs went six innings, giving up three hits and four earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts. Craig Schlitter pitched seven innings while giving up four hits and one earned run. He also walked one and struck out five.

In the second contest, Maine took a 1-0 lead after Fran Whitten came home from third on a fielder’s choice from Eric White. There was also a throwing error on the play. Whitten reached first base on a leadoff single to start the inning and stole second base to get into scoring position. He then moved to third after a single by Justin Leisenheimer.

The Bulldogs answered with six runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by Mike Delponte’s grand slam and a two-run double by Kevin Brown.

Ian Leisenheimer belted a two-run shot to center field in the eighth for the Black Bears.

Starting pitcher Mike Connolly went two innings, giving up four hits and six runs, five of which were earned. He also walked two and struck out two. Connolly’s record fell to 1-3 on the year. Joseph Michaud went seven innings for the Bulldogs, surrendering three hits and one run which was not earned. He walked one and struck out seven. 

Bates 9, Salem State 4

SALEM, Mass. — Bates senior Karl Alexander threw six shutout innings, moving within one victory of tying for the team’s all-time record for victories, to lead the Bobcats to a 9-4 victory over Salem State University on Saturday afternoon.

Alexander, who walked one with one strikeout, allowed only three singles through the first six innings as the Bobcats built an 8-0 lead. The righthander is now 3-1 this season and 14-11 for his career, and has moved out of a tie with Dennis Gromelski for sole possession of second place on the team’s all-time wins list, trailing only Mike Kinsman, who went 15-7 for his career.

Bates scored first in the second inning on an RBI single by junior Kevin McGregor. The Bobcats increased their lead in the fourth when senior captain Mike Ciummei  singled, stole second, and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Steve Burke and a throwing error by the Vikings. Sophomore Jeff Gunn followed with a sacrifice fly that made the score 3-0.

Two consecutive hits in the fifth chased Salem State starter Ed Deren, who gave up four hits in four innings with four strikeouts, and three earned runs. Cory Collins relieved Deren and sophomore Ryan Curit, who had doubled, scored the first run of the inning on an error by the catcher after a stolen base by Burke. McGregor singled home Ciummei and sophomore Griff Tewksbury with the bases loaded, and Bates led 6-0.

Bates scored two more in the sixth, as sophomore Kevin Davis led off with a walk, then advanced to second when Curit was hit by a pitch. Tewksbury singled to score Davis, and first-year Nate Pajka later hit a two-out RBI single to score Curit for an 8-0 lead.

McGregor finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Tewksbury added three hits and two runs for Bates, which improved to 10-4. Salem State (11-5) was led by Kyle McElroy, who went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in.

Men’s Lacrosse

Trinity 10, Bates 7

LEWISTON — In spite of a dominating performance on faceoffs by first-year Mac Jackson, Trinity College defeated the Bates College men’s lacrosse team 10-7 in a NESCAC showdown on Saturday at Garcelon Field.

Jackson won an incredible 18 of 19 faceoffs for the Bobcats from the Trinity combination of T.J. Cholnoky and Will Benjamin, controlling the ball before it left the circle in most cases, as he collected an astounding 13 ground balls in the game. Jackson also netted his first career goal.

First-year Matthew Hauck led Trinity with three goals, while junior Rob Nogueras added two scores. Junior Nick Shaheen  and junior Steve Manning had a goal and an assist apiece. Senior Alex Gottsch caused five turnovers and scoooped a team-high four ground balls for Trinity.

Bates senior Jason Hichborn scored twice and added a pair of assists, while first-year Jack Strain also scored a pair of goals. Junior Gary Guinta and sophomore Wylie Leabo also scored goals, and senior Reed Browncollected six ground balls.

Bates had leads of 1-0 and 3-2 in an evenly played first 20 minutes of action.

Johnson finished with 12 saves for Trinity. Senior Adam Scharff made six saves in the first half for Bates; sophomore Charlie Kazarian played the second half and made one save.

Women’s Lacrosse

UMF 18, Becker 4

LEICESTER, Mass. — The University of Maine at Farmington defeated Becker College 18-4 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

UMF (2-1) outshot Becker 42-9 on the afternoon. Senior Emma Morrison led the Beavers with five goals. Alyssa Neptune contributed three goals. Maddi Kadnar, Miranda Levesque, Molly Carbin and Marisa Hanning all chipped in two goals.

Hannah Goodenow made three saves in the cage for the Beavers.

Trinity 14, Bates 8

HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior attacker Caite Irvine totaled six goals and one assist to lead No. 5 Trinity to a 14-8 victory over No. 20 Bates in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. Trinity improved to 5-0 with its 19th consecutive regular-season victory, while the Bobcats fell to 3-3 with their first loss in three games.

Irvine scored back-to-back goals with just under 10 minutes left in the first half to offset back-to-back tallies by Bates sophomore midfielder Wally Pierce earlier in the half and give Trinity a 4-2 lead.

A goal by Bobcats senior attacker Joan O’Neill with 4:40 left in the half cut the Bantams advantage to 4-3, but Trinity closed the first frame with a 3-0 spurt started by a free-position tally by junior midfielder Megan Leonhard with 3:41 on the clock. 

O’Neill had four goals and an assist for the Bobcats, giving her a hat trick in all six games so far this season.

Hadley Duncan scored four times for Trinity. Pierce added three goals and two assists for Bates. O’Neill’s assist increased her Bates career record in that category to 54. She is up to 174 career points, only eight shy of the team record held by Molly Wagner.
