The numbers continued to climb Monday night as high winds and falling trees limbs knocked out power throughout Androscoggin, Cumberland and Oxford counties.

More than 9,000 customers were without power throughout the tri-county region as of 8:30 p.m. John Carroll, a spokesman for Central Maine Power, said a majority of the outages stemmed from high winds, downed trees and limbs on power lines.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service said Monday night that the region experienced sustained winds of 20-25 miles per hour throughout the day, with gusts upwards of 41 miles per hour.

The majority of the outages were in Oxford and Cumberland counties, where 4,086 and 4,008 homes, respectively, were in the dark. More than 900 residents in Androscoggin County were without power Monday night.

Carroll said most of the damage stemmed from snapped limbs that had been caught up in trees over winter blowing into power lines. A dispatcher with Oxford County Sheriff’s Office also reported that fire crews were on hand at roads in Harrison, Canton, Gilead and Denmark because of downed power lines.
