MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Academy Decathlon Team, coached by Cathy Foyt and Scott Foyt, competed in the State Academic Decathlon Championship at Deering High School on March 3. Twelve schools and 150 students participated.
Monmouth finished as the Maine Runner-Up School and as the Maine Champion in the Small School Division (schools with under 650 students). By finishing as the first place small school, Monmouth will compete nationally, with computers on-line, Wednesday, April 4, and Friday, April 27, against the other small school winners from each state.
The top five schools in this year’s decathlon were: first, Scarborough High School; second, Monmouth Academy, first in small school division; third, Oak Hill High School, Wales; fourth, Bangor High School; fifth, Calais High School.
In the past 14 out of 15 years, the Monmouth Academy Decathlon Team has placed as either the state champion or state runner-up team. Three times, the team has represented the state in the National Academic Decathlon Championships: 1999, California, fifth; 2002, Arizona, sixth; and 2004, Idaho, fifth.
This year’s topic is the “Age of Imperialism.”
