The Maine Gladiators bantam hockey team finished its season with a flourish, winning the championship in the Seacoast playoffs played at the arenas in Dover and Rochester, N.H.

The Gladiators fought off Lakes Region, 2-1, in the opener. Maine’s team had better opportunities and more shots on goal throughout. Kyle Morin got things started in the first period, assisted by Austin Roy. Ryley Austin added an unassisted goal.

Maine continued its dominant play with two goals in each of the first two periods of a 4-1 win over Berlin, N.H. Matt Brooks led the way with two goals. Jozef Frechette and Morin each added a goal. Griffin Wade, Kyle Ullrich and Austin each registered an assist.

Lakes Region looked to avenge the earlier defeat in the championship game, but it was to no avail as the Gladiators ruled the day, 4-2.

There was no scoring in the first period, with close checking limiting the offensive opportunities. Lakes Region got on the board first in the second period, but that awakened the Gladiators’ run of three unanswered goals.

Roy, Brooks and Morin each scored with assists by Reid Pomerleau and Roy. Morin added an unassisted goal in the third to ice it.

Ridge Servidio and Kyle Welsh shared goaltending duties in the tournament. Their timely saves contributed heavily to the championship run.

Championship team personnel were Matt Brooks, Zach Vanderwerf, Nate Granholm, Austin Roy, Benjamin Steele, Ryley Austin, Kyle Ullrich, Kiana Melvin, Jozef Frechette, Griffin Wade, Kyle Welsh, Ridge Servidio, Kyle Morin, Conrad Grimmer, Kyle Lussier, Tyler O’Conner and Reid Pomerleau. David Steele was head coach, assisted by Andy Guerin, Keith Pomerleau and Ray Teixeira.
