PORTLAND — The Portland Symphony Orchestra will present a concert of “Bruckner, Beethoven and More” on Sunday, April 15, at Merrill Auditorium.
Music Director Robert Moody will conduct the at 2:30 p.m. program featuring pieces by Anton Bruckner, Osvaldo Golijov, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Ludwig Van Beethoven.
The concert begins with Bruckner’s Three Pieces for Orchestra, WAB 97, excellent examples of the Austrian composer’s lighter symphonic style. Next is Golijov’s “Sidereus”, a piece that the Grammy award-winning composer wrote in 2010. Inspired by Galileo’s Sidereus Nuncious, it features melodies that are evocative of the sky, at once ominous and also heavenly.
Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” takes listeners through a variety of musical themes, flowing between modern and contemporary classical sounds. And, the program concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major, constantly moving in new directions with its suspenseful harmonies and melodic instrumentation.
The Sunday Classical Concert will be broadcast on MPBN’s Maine Stage at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9.
