MEXICO — The Police Department has received a $2,500 grant from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to conduct extra patrols on ATV trails.

Lt. Roy Hodsdon said the department has received a similar grant for several years.

The grant runs from now until July 31. He said as soon as the trails are dried out, patrols will begin.

In a related matter, a daylong course on ATV driver safety will be offered free to anyone who’d like to learn more about driving on trails. The course is required for those ages 10 to 16. It is jointly sponsored by the Police Department and the Roxbury ATV Club, and will be taught by police officers.

It will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Roxbury Town Office. Lunch will be provided. To register, call the Police Department at 364-5686 or Roland Patneaude at 562-0949.

The Mexico Police Explorers, a youth organization sponsored by the Police Department, received a check for $500 from NewPage Corp. on Wednesday.  Hodsdon said the money will help pay for uniforms and sending members to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s youth camp.
