AUBURN — City councilors will kick off a new phase next week in their search for a city manager by interviewing candidates behind closed doors in Auburn Hall.
Councilors are scheduled to meet in executive session at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 9 and 10, to interview six candidates.
Some will come back for a second round of interviews April 25 and 26, said Dick Metivier of Eaton Peabody Consulting Group.
“They’ll talk to those six and hopefully narrow it down to two or three,” Metivier said.
Names and details of the candidates were confidential, but Metivier said four are from Maine.
“The group that we have varies in experience,” Metivier said. “Except for one, they all have previous city management experience, and one candidate was clearly a top executive in a larger city with a lot of people reporting to him.”
Metivier said it’s up to the candidates and city councilors whether remaining names will be released before the final interviews. The City Council is on track to select a manager and begin negotiations in May.
The previous City Council voted to terminate City Manager Glenn Aho’s contract in October. They voted in November to hire consultants Eaton Peabody to lead the search for Aho’s replacement and to manage the city in the meantime. Don Gerrish, an Eaton Peabody consultant, is serving as interim city manager.
The city began advertising for a new manager in February. They’d hoped to have at least 75 resumes to sort through but received only 25 by the deadline.
