AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Officials say an 81-year-old Maine woman who was struck by an out-of-control Jeep while walking on a sidewalk has died from her injuries.

The family of Ruth Epperson of Augusta says she died Thursday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Epperson’s son, Gerald Epperson, said his mother was an avid walker who trekked up and down North Belfast Avenue for 44 years without an incident before being struck last week. Police say the Jeep hit a parked car before careening into Epperson. No charges have been filed.

Her husband, Clyde Epperson, tells the Kennebec Journal that she never regained consciousness after being airlifted from the scene.
