NORWAY — Carol J. Gutekunst is running for the position of Register of Probate in Oxford County.

Gutekunst is on the ballot for the Democratic primary June 12.

Register of Probate Bruce Rood is not running for re-election.

Gutekunst served as the county probate clerk from 1988 to 1994, when she was appointed deputy register of probate and served there until retiring in 2008.

She is a U.S. Navy veteran and has worked for the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.

“The probate office needs the full-time attention of its register, and I intend to devote my energies and experience to the task each and every day, if elected,” Gutekunst said in a statement.

“My extensive probate knowledge, experience and proven commitment to Oxford County government will be the foundation of my election campaign,” she said.

Gutekunst and her husband, Philip Gutekunst, have been Norway residents since 1977.

The register of probate and judge of probate are elected positions. The register of probate can make appointments in informal estates with or without wills and without prior notice, and is responsible to the Judge of Probate for preparation and recording court proceedings and documents.
